Tuesday Tune: ‘With You’ from Ghost the Musical
Last June I took a trip to New York to see a few Broadway shows. Ghost the Musical was playing the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and I had heard good things about it from my co-worker Lauren Platts. I like the Academy Award-winning movie starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, so I decided to give the musical a try.
Naturally, I was a little nervous going into the theater. I didn’t know how they could create the effects of a ghost on stage. I was unfamiliar with the music and the lead actors. As the theater filled, my friend and I had a conversation about how cheesy we thought it was about to be. We were terribly wrong. I have only been so emotionally moved by one other Broadway musical.
Ghost is one of my favorite film-to-stage adaptations, and I was very impressed with the music. It’s the perfect mix of upbeat and heart-wrenching. Music and lyrics are by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and Glen Ballard, who has worked on some of the most iconic albums in history, including Michael Jackson’s “Bad.” A cool collaboration of “Unchained Melody” is featured, during which the lead actor sings with the original recording by The Righteous Brothers.
“With You” was the most memorable song for me. It’s the moment in the show when you start bawling and you’re too nervous to look around in fear that you’re the only one. I promise you won’t be. Watch Caissie Levy from the original Broadway production perform the moving song below.
Ghost the Musical plays Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center April 1-6, 2014, as part of our 2013-14 Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series. I strongly encourage you to see this show! You can secure seats now with Season Tickets. Click here for more information.
Just because I love the music so much, here’s their 2012 Tony Awards performance featuring “Suspend My Disbelief”/”I Had a Life.”
