Tuesday Tune: “Down in Mississippi” by Mavis Staples

March 6, 2012

Today’s Tuesday Tune celebrates the legendary Mavis Staples, who’s performing for one-night-only on Friday, March 30, in McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square.

In a career spanning over sixty years, Mavis Staples began singing with the family gospel group The Staple Singers (“I’ll Take You There”, “Respect Yourself”). Mavis has been nominated for multiple Grammy awards in five different genres and won the 2011 Grammy for Best Americana Album for her album You Are Not Alone for which she collaborated with producer Jeff Tweedy from the alternative rock band Wilco. Mavis is responsible for blazing a rhythm and blues trail while never relinquishing her gospel roots.
