Meet Joey – Star of WAR HORSE

March 22, 2012

Last night, over 400 Charlotteans attended the 2012/13 Duke Energy Broadway Lights Series Kick-Off Celebration, hosted by Mike Collins (WFAE’s Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins).  Guests watched video highlights from all the upcoming shows (CLICK HERE to read about the new season) and were treated to very special surprise guest…

The four-legged star of WAR HORSE, Joey, surprised the audience by galloping on stage!  The puppet (Joey), which weighs 120lbs, is handmade by 14 people from South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company.

There are three puppeteers.  One at the head controls the ears and head; one in the heart controls breathing and the front legs; a third in the hind controls the tail and back legs.

WAR HORSE tells the story of young Albert’s beloved horse, Joey, which has been sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. In a tale that the Sunday Express said is “…both epic and intimate,” and “absolutely guaranteed to move the heart,” Joey is caught in enemy crossfire and ends up serving both sides of the war before landing in no man’s land. Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. What follows is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship.

WAR HORSE is filled with stirring music and songs, and at the heart of the show are life-sized puppets which bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on stage. “The puppetry is nothing short of miraculous,” according to The Times of London.

WAR HORSE, winner of 5 2011 Tony Awards, comes to Charlotte May 28-June 2, 2013, in Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
