Looking Ahead: Martin Short, Jiminy Glick, Humpy Wheeler and more…

March 26, 2012

Here are a few things we’re excited about this week!

In An Evening with Martin Short, the actor takes the stage in the first act as a stand-up comedian and his riotous show will include a dynamic combination of songs, video, bits and sketches about his life and career. In the second act he will resurrect one of his most beloved characters, Jiminy Glick (the world’s most obnoxious celebrity talk show host)!

BREAKING NEWS……Talk show host Jiminy Glick will interview local NASCAR legend HUMPY WHEELER in act two. Humpy’s the former president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, a Formula One consultant and well known for having a way with words himself . He’s just the guy to get into the fast lane with Jiminy. Be there when the rubber hits the road!

In the words of Martin himself: “I’d say that this show is like a one man variety show. It’s as if Carol Burnett had done her show all by herself — it’s that approach. ‘A Party with Marty,’ I call it.”

Don’t miss An Evening with Martin Short this Saturday, March 31, in Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts.

  • Pilobolus Brings a Mix of Humor, Invention and Drama to Knight Theater – TONIGHT!

For 40 remarkable years, Pilobolus has created and performed work that uses movement to express the beauty of physical and emotional interconnectedness in conflict with the glorious possibility of individual freedom.

The company’s special 40th anniversary season features three extraordinary programs that look back in delight — with works such as Untitled, a 1975 winner, and Duet 92, a passionate piece from 1992. CLICK HERE FOR FULL PROGRAM INFORMATION!

The Charlotte Observer‘s Courtney Devores spoke with dance captain Jun Kuribayashi about what makes Pilobolus different from other ballet companies, musical casts or modern dance groups.  Kuribayashi says it’s the collaborative process that the company is built on.  “Our whole idea is many minds are better than one,” said Kuribayashi, a former break-dancer. “It’s not just the artistic director telling you everything you’re supposed to do. The dancers come up with the moves and artistic directors will help innovate and kind of sculpt it.”  CLICK HERE to read the full article.

And the group performed on “Charlotte Today” this morning.  CLICK HERE to watch the video!
