Looking Ahead: Rock Bang! Die Roten Punkte Announces Return to Charlotte, Steve Forbert On Sale and More…

July 2, 2012

Here are a few things we’re excited about this week including two great shows that go on sale TODAY!

  • Back by Popular Demand – Die Roten Punkte Return to Charlotte – ON SALE NOW!

Die Roten Punkte will once again ‘Rock Bang’ Charlotte this July 31-Aug. 5, in Duke Energy Theater at Spirit Square.

Die Roten Punkte (Otto and Astrid Rott) pump up the musical intensity in their high-powered “return concert.” At least they would, if they could ever get all the mikes, guitars and stools working at the same time. Otto and Astrid’s attempts to perform numbers from their first album are constantly interrupted by technical hitches, and it’s impossible to figure out which are real and which are feigned.

Whatever the truth, the brother-sister act is always amusing, trying to keep up a rock ‘n’ roll appearance while endlessly bickering. There’s something intensely funny about their German accents, their suspiciously close relationship, Otto’s lippy and eye shadow, and Astrid’s antics with drumsticks.

As they play with our stereotypes of trashy Euro bands, they (eventually) produce high-voltage music that blows the roof off the building. It’s a class act, entertaining both musically and comically. If you’ve ever laughed at Spinal Tap or Flight of the Conchords, then say “Hallo” to your favorite new band, Die Roten Punkte!

Singer-songwriter Steve Forbert had his first major hit in 1979 when he was only 25 years old and now fans will get a chance to hear the acclaimed singer/songwriter in the intimate Stage Door Theater.

His debut album, Alive On Arrival, showcased his distinctive musicality and became one of the year’s most acclaimed albums. After being compared to folk-based stars like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, Forbert still managed to forge his own, more modern path with his hit sophomore record Jackrabbit Slim. The highlight of the album was the #11 Billboard hit “Romeo’s Tune”: an upbeat song with timeless lyrics sweetened by a poetic sensibility, which has since become Steve’s signature style.

His brash-yet-sensitive take on songwriting and his unaffected delivery propelled the album up the charts, leading to sold-out shows and a feature in Rolling Stone magazine. Thirty-plus years later, he’s still writing acclaimed songs and has released 14 studio albums, including a Grammy-nominated tribute to another Mississippi legend, Jimmie Rodgers.
