Broadway or Bust – Sneak Peek

August 16, 2012

Taylor Neal and Kyle Conroy represent Charlotte!

In June, Charlotte’s Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards’ (The Blumeys) Best Actor, Kyle Conroy, and Best Actress, Taylor Neal, were off to NYC to compete in the National High School Musical Theater Awards (The Jimmys).

The two students were part of the first annual Blumey Awards, which culminated Sunday, May 20, at a gala award celebration where winners in 13 categories were announced and nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Musical performed live on stage at the Belk Theater.  Maureen O’Boyle, anchor for WBTV, emceed the black-tie event.

Kyle Conroy, of Jay M. Robinson High School in Cabarrus County, won for his portrayal of “Seymour” in Little Shop Of Horrors.  Taylor Neal, of Cuthbertson High School in Union County, won for her role as “Belle” in Beauty and the Beast.

The two winners received an all-expenses-paid trip and week-long stay in New York City where they trained and competed with other regional winners at The Jimmy Awards.  This is the first time theater and music students in our region had a chance to compete in the National High School Musical Theater Awards.

While many attended The Blumey Awards on Sunday, May 20, many may have wondered what happened once Conroy and Neal headed to the Big Apple.

Well, PBS is doing a three-part primetime series, BROADWAY OR BUST, that follows the 60 regional high school musical theater performers, their trip to New York City and their determination to win the ultimate national theater award. PBS is airing the special three consecutive Sundays, September 9–23, at 8/7 C on PBS (check local listings).  CLICK HERE to see a sneak peek at the series.

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to Kyle Conroy and Taylor Neal for making Charlotte proud!
