Sister Act, nominated for five Tony Awards in 2011, made a big splash last night playing to a packed house at Ovens Auditorium!

I just got through hanging out with Ta’Rea Campbell, who plays Deloris Van Cartier, before her interview with Brigida Mack on WBTV News at 4. While we waited in the green room, I asked here a few questions:

What makes you feel “Fabulous, Baby?”
Feeling comfortable in my own skin, being surrounded by those I love and that love me and laughing. Laughing makes me feel fabulous.

Tell me about your connection to Charlotte.
My aunt works at CMC here and has lived here for many years. My family is also from Myrtle Beach.

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions?
To shop less ( laughs). I need to start saving for my wedding!

If you could ask God one question, what would it be?
Will I ever be skinny (laughs again)? OK, seriously, I don’t think I would question God. I would just continue doing what he asks of me and being the best person I can be.

Other than the songs of Sister Act, what is your favorite Alan Menken score?
Easy, Little Shop of Horrors. That was the first Broadway show I saw as a kid.

FUN FACT:
Ta’Rea Campbell has never tried coffee. She doesn’t like the smell of it.

The Reviews are In

Last night’s audience gave Sister Act  one of the best standing ovations I’ve seen in my history at Blumenthal Performing Arts.  The Charlotte Observer’s Lawrence Toppman said it best: “[Sister Act] sent spirits soaring Tuesday at Ovens Auditorium, where the standing ovation Charlotteans inevitably give Broadway tours seemed more heartfelt and justified.”

Toppman called the hit musical “infectiously joyous” and stated this production “improves on Whoopi Goldberg’s 1992 film.” It was a rave review.  CLICK HERE to read the full review.
