Looking Ahead: Get to Know David Sedaris

April 15, 2013

Spend An Evening with David Sedaris next Monday, April 22, in Belk Theater, and not only will you laugh out loud, but you’ll have an opportunity to purchase his latest book Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls before it goes on sale to the public the following morning.  As an added bonus, David Sedaris will sign the book.

Entertainment Weekly recently gave Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls a B+ and called Sedaris a “leading figure in a less angsty movement — call it the comic confessional — that artfully milked embarrassing personal incidents for literary laugh.”  The review says Sedaris, “again recounts cringeworthy episodes like his boyhood stint on a swim team (”Most of my ribbons were for good sportsmanship”) and drops witty, often tangential aperçus (on Australia: ”It’s Canada in a thong”).”  CLICK HERE to read the full review.

Just how does Sedaris craft such humorous stories that leave audiences in stitches?

“He tests pre-publication material by regularly reading works in progress to live audiences, a practice that has become an integral part of his writing process,” says Kristin Hohenadel in her article, “Say It Out Loud: How David Sedaris Makes His Writing Better.”

Hohenadel says, “Taking the collective temperature of an actual room helps Sedaris gauge how well a joke is working or if a story has gone on too long or has a satisfying ending. “There is no substitute for a live audience,” he says.”
