Broadway Experience 2013 Blumenthal Performing Arts Doctor Family Foundation

A dozen high school students are enjoying the trip of a lifetime this weekend as part of the fourth Broadway Experience, a Blumenthal Performing Arts program made possible by The Doctor Family Foundation.

The students include Andrew Paluszak and David Jordan, both from East Gaston; Avery Philemon from Sun Valley; Jacob Caceres-Reyes, Joneka Percentie and Shakayla Stewart, all from Northwest School of the Arts; Jonathan Able from William Amos Hough; Kasey Stewart and Matt Roper, both from Marvin Ridge; Mariel Butler from Independence; Rebekah Meekins from East Mecklenburg; and Taryn DeRasmo from South Point.

On Friday night, they enjoyed dinner at Sardi’s and the new musical Kinky Boots, which features music from Grammy® Award-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper and four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein. Here are some more highlights from the trip:

Photo 1: The students strike a pose Saturday during a visit to Central Park. (Love the cute photo-bomber on the left!)

Photo 2:  Natalie Ellis (center), who is starring in Forbidden Broadway and toured with 9 to 5: The Musical, talked with the group about what it takes to be a performer. The Broadway Experience crew enjoyed the Saturday matinee of Forbidden Broadway.

Photo 3: A tour of Lincoln Center yielded an auditory treat: Listening in to a rehearsal of the New York Philharmonic.

Photo 4: Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella capped Saturday’s schedule! After the show, cast and creative team members talked with the students about the Broadway hit.
