Blumey Awards’ Best Actor and Best Actress to Take the Stage in New York

June 27, 2013

On May 19, Areon Mobasher and Eva Maria Noblezada won Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, at the second annual Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards, also known as the Blumey Awards. Not only did they win a Blumey Award, but they also won a trip to New York to participate in the Jimmy Awards, the National High School Musical Theater Awards, which started Wednesday, June 26, and continue through Tuesday, July 2.

Eva and Areon will compete Monday, July 1, with representatives from 30 other cities around the country for the honor of Best Actor and Best Actress. The competition takes place at the Minskoff Theater, which houses Disney’s The Lion King. The Lion King tour comes to Belk Theater Aug. 6-Sept. 1.

Areon and Eva traveled with Blumenthal’s Education Programs Manager Michelle Youngs to New York for the Jimmy Awards competition. The two contestants will have the opportunity to perform on an actual Broadway stage. The first musical Eva saw in New York was Disney’s The Lion King, so she is super excited to be on that same stage. This is Areon’s first trip to NYC, and he is taking it all in! He is looking forward to dinner at Sardi’s Restaurant in Times Square and seeing the Tony-nominated Broadway revival of Annie at the Palace Theatre.

The Jimmy Awards production team divided the 30 students into groups of five, based on the medleys that they will perform. Eva and Areon will be in the  group headed by Liz Callaway, an actress and singer who has performed in Broadway shows such as Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, and who provided the singing voices for various animated movie musical characters, such as Anya/Anastasia in 20th Century Fox’s Anastasia.

When comparing this year’s competition to last year’s, Youngs says, “All of the students are new this year, whereas last year, there were several students who were back to compete for a second time.”
