FanBlog: Local Angelique Kidjo Fan Looks Forward to Feb. 8 Show

January 8, 2014

Angelique Kidjo

Born in West Africa, Angelique Kidjo is a Grammy award-winning music recording artist deemed “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine. Kidjo’s internationally acclaimed repertoire includes collaborations with various recording artists, such as Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, Branford Marsalis, Joss Stone, and many more. Kidjo comes to McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square Feb. 8, a moment Charlotte resident Lorrie H. says she’s really looking forward to! Check out what Lorrie had to say in her FanBlog below!

The amazing Angelique Kidjo is coming to Charlotte and I want to go! I discovered Angelique Kidjo’s music 10 years ago at a yard sale (you never know what treasures you’ll find). I was intrigued by the cover art on two of her CDs — plus, I loved world music. I found her music to be as exotic as the art, and I was hooked.

Her music is joyful and uplifting, and it greatly lightened my mood in the confines of my office. Half the time I have no idea what she is saying (she sings in African languages, in French as well as in English), but it doesn’t matter. I like her sound and have bought more of her CDs since. I’m not a music expert but I believe her website when it says her musical influences are Afropop, Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, jazz, gospel and Latin styles. “Ayé” was the first album I listened to, and it makes you want to dance in your chair, or on your feet!

I am so looking forward to seeing Angelique in person, and especially at Spirit Square. McGlohon Theater is one of my favorite venues in Charlotte because of the great acoustics and beautiful stained glass setting. It feels up close and personal, and over the years, I’ve heard that performers love it too, which always makes for a better experience!

I recently looked Angelique up and never knew how astounding she is as an individual. She’s been called one of the 100 Most Influential Women in the World.  Charlotte has an opportunity to see an international treasure in one of the best venues around.
