Team Broadway wins 33 awards at MTCA

Team Broadway, a musical theater skill development program at Spirit Square, is proving to be a huge success! The program is designed to help intermediate- to advanced-level teen performers across the Charlotte area master their skills. The group recently traveled to California to compete in the Musical Theatre Competitions of America (MTCA). They brought home a whopping total of 33 awards and we couldn’t be more proud their success and hard work!

In weekly training sessions instructed by the award-winning, professional directing team of Linda Booth and Lori Anne Sword, students employ a variety of musical numbers to strengthen vocal, dance and character development skills.

Twenty-six of the Team Broadway students participated in the Musical Theater Competitions of America held in Los Angeles Feb. 7-9.

MTCA is an educational competitive experience for high school, and middle school musical theater students that provides ensembles and individual students the opportunity to perform for experienced adjudicators in a quality theatrical venue.

“Lori Anne and Linda wanted to make this opportunity available to as many of the Team Broadway kids as possible. So, our biggest challenge was raising funds to make it accessible to even our scholarship students.  Almost $15K was raised through Kickstarter, an auction and a VIP Party during our December showcases, as well as direct donations to our scholarship fund.  We were able to reduce the cost of travel for all participants as well as give 3 students a full scholarship for participation,” explained a Team Broadway Spokesperson.

One of the parents of a Team Broadway student says this experience is one her child will never forget. “This will definitely help them grow as performers.  It reaffirms all the training we do in Team Broadway each week, and the ability to sing for judges and then receive their feedback and incorporate it into their performances is critical for them going forward.  They learned life skills through their favorite thing in the world to do – what could be better than that?”
