Tuesday Tune: ‘Oil Talking to Ya’ by David Wilcox
American folk singer-songwriter David Wilcox has an interesting relationship with the state of North Carolina. The musician, who’s coming to McGlohon Theater on April 6, didn’t begin his music career until he and a friend biked the Blue Ridge Parkway. On that same trip, he discovered Warren Wilson College in Asheville and transferred there, and that’s when his career began to blossom. He and his wife call the charming mountain city home. While he did leave Asheville after college, Wilcox claims “Asheville had its tractor beam on us — it had its gravity. We had to go back.”
With more than 15 albums produced and 750,000 sold, Wilcox recently released “blaze,” which he calls a “complex blossom of contradictions that is held together at the center by this blissfully focused state of mind that I first came to know while pedaling across the country.”
The album’s lead single, “Oil Talking to Ya,” is a social statement about the toll we take on the environment. Listen to a live performance of it below.
