Tuesday Tune: ‘The Reason’ by Andy McKee
Growing up with my dad and both my grandpas being guitar pickers gave me the knack for knowing when someone is a decent guitar player and when someone is an excellent guitar player. Some of my favorite guitarists are Eric Clapton, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Vince Gill and my dad’s personal favorite, Tommy Emmanuel. (Just to clarify, we are talking about acoustic guitar.)
I can say, with confidence, that Andy McKee is one of the best guitarists I have ever heard, and he has rightfully earned his spot on my list. McKee is clearly naturally talented, but I can only imagine the endless nights of practice and dedication it took for the self-taught musician to achieve the sound he has today.
Andy McKee began his career like many instrumentalists, as a guitar teacher, and it wasn’t until his appearance at the National Finger Style Guitar Championships in Winfield, Kansas, that his career as a performer really took off. From there he has sold over 60,000 records and continues to inspire and teach other guitarists around the world. At one point he held the top three highest-rated videos on YouTube, and still holds some of the highest-rated videos on the site.
He recently released a four song EP titled “Mythmaker.” Hear his impeccable musicality and guitar skills on “The Reason” from his new EP below.
Just for fun! Here’s one of the videos that skyrocketed Andy to fame, his cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”
