Spotlight on the Stars of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo
The hit Broadway musical based on the Bible story revolving around Jacob’s most beloved son, Joseph, is hitting the Belk Theater stage starting Feb. 24, 2015. Since 1982, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has captured people’s hearts and magnified their sense of rhythm through its show-stopping musical numbers, colorful imagery and stage production. The musical retells the Biblical story of Joseph and his multicolored coat, his 11 brothers, and the numerous trials and triumphs he encountered as Israel’s favorite son.
As if we weren’t already lucky enough to have this show in Charlotte, we also have the pleasure of seeing “American Idol” alumni from seasons three and five — Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young — star alongside each other as The Narrator and Joseph!
Alabama-born DeGarmo was brimming with talent even at the early age of 10. Her singing took her through the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards, and then onto productions such as Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, all the way through to being a finalist on “America’s Most Talented Kid.” It wasn’t until season three of “American Idol” that the world finally heard her tremendous vocals. She went on to be runner-up to Fantasia Barrino and afterwards signed with a record label, released an album, “Blue Skies,” numerous singles and an EP in 2009. DeGarmo continued in musical theater as well, starring in productions like Nerds, 9 to 5 (part of our 2010-11 season), Hair and Hairspray.
As she plays The Narrator in this production, her real-life beau, Young, will be playing the main man himself, Joseph! The two met while co-starring in the musical Hair in 2010 and have been inseparable ever since. They’ve been married for one year!
Young was born and raised in Denver and throughout his life pursued his passion for singing by performing in choirs and high school productions. He even sang the national anthem at The Pepsi Center.
As he got older, he moved to Los Angeles to make it big, and landed the chance of a lifetime with season five of “American Idol.” He was eliminated after fighting his way into the top seven, and he moved back to Colorado. He performed in MTV’s “Total Request Live” and Disney’s Christmas Day Parade, and he appeared on various TV shows, such as “Bones” and “Rock of Love: Charm School.”
It wasn’t until 2008 that he made his Broadway debut with Grease as Kenickie, later playing Danny Zuko in the national tour. He now has his own music company called Young Brother’s Entertainment and is working on a CD with duets of him and DeGarmo.
First off, let me say that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat always has, and always will have, a place in my heart. It is so … what’s the word … “fantabulous?” Does that work? Because that’s the only awesome word I can think of to describe it. I first saw this show when I was probably 6 or 7 years old and had no inkling of what a Broadway show was. However when I was sitting with my family, eating Cheetos and watching this spectacular show take place in front of me, I knew I had been bitten by the theater bug. We took home the soundtrack that night, and I played it nonstop everyday for weeks on end on our deck patio, dancing and prancing around like no one was watching (although my parents were probably watching and laughing). So naturally when I saw that Joseph was coming to Charlotte, I was very excited to say the least.
Secondly I can attest to DeGarmo’s performance and vocal abilities as I have seen them firsthand! In January of last year, my Dad took my sister and I to see the musical Nerds, and when I saw her play the role of Sally, I was blown away by her talent. Not only is her voice paralleled with her stunning good looks, but she was able to pull off a nerd pretty well (and I can say that because I too am a nerd … sometimes). She is such a talented performer with passion to boot!
With all this being said, I highly encourage ALL of you (every single person reading this, yes, that’s you) to buy tickets for this show when the time comes! It’s such a beautiful production with superb music, high energy and a great message that says any dream you have can be turned into reality; you just have to believe in the beauty of your dreams.
