Blumenthal Vice President of Marketing Wendy Oglesby receives an award at Studio 54 in New York City May 12.

Think about this: We are already halfway through 2014, but at Blumenthal Performing Arts, it has already been a whole year for our 2013-14 season. And so much has happened! Even though the packed season has almost come and gone, we still have two shows left! Before the season closes, we are presenting The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, an exhilarating love story, and ONCE, a story about going for your dreams and the power of music.

Not only have we been graced with outstanding shows and performances on our stages but our own Wendy Oglesby (pictured), vice president of marketing, recently received the Broadway League’s award for Outstanding Achievement in Road Marketing at Studio 54 in New York City! Congratulations to her, as she has been a fearless and fantastic leader, helping to make this season, and every season, a success.

We couldn’t have asked for a better season kickoff last year than with the fabulous Broadway Extra I Love Lucy Live on Stage. This was followed by several show-stopping performances and sold-out shows, such as The Book of Mormon, which broke the two-week venue record for ticket sales at Belk Theater.

Among the other blockbuster shows that hit the stage were Disney’s The Lion King and an unauthorized Harry Potter parody, Potted Potter. We even went back to the basics with some new twists on fairy-tale classics such as Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty and Peter and the Starcatcher, the prequel that starts the legend that is Peter Pan. Now as we conclude the stellar season, we have two musicals that you will not want to miss.

One of the most intoxicating love stories of theater, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, is hitting the Belk Theater stage starting July 15. Time magazine raves that it is “a don’t miss theatre event!” The musical tells the tale of the beautiful Bess, who struggles to break free of her backbiting past, and the only one who can save her is the brave Porgy. Follow this powerful romance as they jump through numerous obstacles to show that true love can prevail.

Once comes to Belk Theater September 30.

ONCE comes to Belk Theater Sept. 30.

Last, but certainly not least, the musical that will put the cherry on top of a remarkable year here at the Blumenthal is ONCE, coming to Belk Theater Sept. 30. Undeniable chemistry forms when a Dublin street performer meets a young woman who is enchanted by his haunting love songs. This show will draw you in from the very first note and never let go. Their romance reminds us how the power of music connects to all of us and to always believe in the beauty of your dreams.

To avoid missing out on our popular shows in the future, be sure to join our email club to get pre-sale tickets before the general public knows! Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on the upcoming season of shows that we’ve got lined up for you.
