The Legendary Briarhoppers 80th Birthday Celebration is coming to McGlohon Theater Aug. 30.

The wonderful musical stylings of The Legendary Briarhoppers will be heard in the Queen City on Aug. 30 to celebrate the group’s 80th year of performing around the country! Taking the McGlohon Theater stage, this bluegrass band will come playing banjo, guitars and fiddle for an audience ready to get their two-stepping on!

We are giving away two tickets to attend this entertaining 80th birthday celebration (complete with bluegrass music for everyone to enjoy)! See details below.

You might be asking yourself where a band name like The Legendary Briarhoppers originated. The name comes from WBT announcer Bill Bivens, who during a hunting trip with WBT’s Charles “Crutch” Crutchfield, was startled by a rabbit jumping out of a thicket. Bivens yelled, “Look at that briarhopper!” At that moment, Crutch found the name for his hillbilly band.

This group of players has actually been rotating members throughout the years since its start in 1934. The original band members were Johnny McAllister, Big Bill Davis, Don White, Thorpe Westerfield, Clarence Etters and Jane Bartlett. The last original 1934 Briarhopper, Don White, died in 2003. The last standing original member of the group is Billie Burton Daniel, who resides in Wilmington. The Legendary Briarhoppers are the longest-continuing grassroots band in the world.

Musicians coming in and out hasn’t stopped the momentum of this band. The musicians that the Briarhoppers have added help build up the musical delight they bring to audiences everywhere they go. Today, Tom Warlick, Alana Flowers, Hannah Flowers, Dillon Flowers, Donnie Little and Little Ellie Flowers keep the band alive with their stage show, which includes the old Briarhopper songs, new songs, and the original scripted commercials of Peruna, Kolor-Bak, Zymole Trokeys and Radio Girl Perfume!

Take a gander at this video of the Briarhoppers performing in 2013!

From the first heart-jumping strum of the banjo to the last note of the fiddle playing, The Legendary Briarhoppers will have you cheering for more by the end of the night. So what are you waiting for? This is one birthday party you won’t want to miss.
