FanBlog: Seat-Filler Still Reeling From Tony Awards Trip

July 9, 2014

If you were a theater geek or musical theater-loving high schooler, what would your ultimate dream trip be? I could imagine it would be going to NYC to see the Tony Awards live, right … or something along those lines? Bailey Patterson, a sophomore at Stuart W. Cramer High School in Gaston County, had the chance of a lifetime (and was the envy of her friends) when she won the “golden ticket” in our random drawing to be a seat-filler at the 68th annual Tony Awards in New York City!

No doubt Patterson can say she had the best summer experience of her life so far; after all, how can you top seeing Hugh Jackman tap dance and Neil Patrick Harris cross dress right in front of you!

It has been almost a month since her star-studded experience in the Big Apple, and she gave us the inside scoop of what it was like to be behind the scenes at the show. Read below to find out what happened on her amazing trip!

Everyone I know who is involved with theater has at least one thing in common: They love the Tony Awards. It’s the one night of the year where people stop and admire the insanely amazing talent our beloved Broadway stars possess.

This year, through a random drawing among participating Blumey Awards schools, Blumenthal Performing Arts gave me the chance to get closer to those stars then I ever imagined possible. I was a seat-filler at the 68th annual Tony Awards in New York City! Before this year, I wasn’t even familiar with anything related to theater, and now I was headed to see the celebrities who had become my new obsessions!

When I got the news that I won the drawing, I flipped out, as did all of my theater friends. My mom of course, was more worried about the trip because she wasn’t going to be able to go, but the gracious Blumenthal associates worked with us and my cousin Kirby Beal got to go with me and my chaperone, Brandon Carter,  on the trip!

Before I knew it, I was on a plane heading off to the Big Apple for the greatest weekend of my life. We left on a Saturday and used the entire day to do a little sightseeing, my favorite places being all the famous theaters of course! That night, we were able to go see an actual Broadway show, Newsies. It was so incredible. Being a singer myself, it always amazes me how talented the Broadway performers are, and every one of them inspires kids like me to work harder at perfecting our craft.

The next day was the day of the award show, and we started very early. We got to attend the dress rehearsal and saw all of the behind the scenes action from the show.

That night we got all dressed up and set off for what I will remember as the best night of my life. I saw so many famous people and was absolutely starstruck the entire evening! The performances were amazing, and the awards were presented to all of my favorite stars. Perhaps the best moment of the night was when I got to take the stage during the Rocky performance. Earlier that day our group had been divided into three sections, and I was lucky enough to be in the group that was going to get to cheer in the background of the Best Musical nominated cast! There are absolutely no words to describe the feeling that you get when you stand on a stage of that magnitude in front of the 6,000 people in the crowd and the millions more watching at home!

When we got back to our hotel room that night, my phone was flooded with texts from my friends and family who were watching and were actually able to see me on TV! I am eternally grateful to everyone involved with Blumenthal Performing Arts for giving me the chance to live out my dreams. I will never forget my experience in New York, and I will forever cherish every memory I have from that fabulous night!

Again, we say congratulations to Bailey on the amazing opportunity she was given to go see the Tony Awards! We are so glad she had a fantastic time and an unforgettable experience.
