Star Spotlight on The Voice Finalist Sasha Allen From Pippin
When you’ve landed a lead role in a musical for the second time, you know you’ve got a voice! At least that’s the case for Sasha Allen, who rose to stardom as a Season Four finalist on NBC’s “The Voice.” Now, she can add to the many items on her performance agenda the role of Leading Player in the 2014 national tour of the Pippin revival, which is coming to Belk Theater May 19-24, 2015.
To give a little background on this fabulous musical piece New York Times calls “ASTONISHING,” the story opens up in a circus big top with Leading Player — the leader of a band of acrobats and performers — starting to tell the tale of a young prince who is on a journey to find himself. Confused about this crazy journey we call life, the prince has the choice of choosing a simple but peaceful life or risking it all to relish a flashing moment of glory. What will he choose?
Not only does this production contain a riveting plot but it also features sizzling choreography and breathtaking acrobatics designed by Gypsy Snider, who co-founded the acrobatic troupe Les 7 Doigts de la Main, a Montreal-based company responsible for the hit show Traces. This magical Pippin is unforgettable.
The name “Leading Player” is actually the perfect description for 32-year-old Allen as she is the leading player in this game we call life. Born in Harlem, she was raised by her single mom and had an older sibling. Living a life full of passion for the arts, she attended LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts in New York as the budding start of her artistic career. During this time, she did some commercial and print work that included an advertisement in TIME magazine for AT&T featuring Michael Jordan! As graduation came, she signed onto Elektra Records at the age of 17 and her singing career finally began.
As this bombshell singer’s success boomed, she had the pleasure of performing back up vocals for artists such as Christina Aguilera, John Legend,Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Alicia Keys and Leona Lewis. She also was able to go on tour with David Bowie and even recorded with the legendary Celine Dion!
It wasn’t until 2008 that she released her first single “Let’s Fly Away,” which flew its way to the top of the dance charts. Down the road, because of failed record contracts, she decided to pursue another facet of her triple threat abilities: acting. In 2009, she made her Broadway début by nailing the role of Dione in the revival of Hair and then appeared for the 2010 West End revival, reprising her role.
It’s clear in her powerhouse singing vocals that she has a true love of rock, soul and R&B music, which she was able to showcase in the fourth season of NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition television show. As most of you might know her from there, she was originally picked to join judge Adam Levine’s team in the first stages of the show. Later on, however, in one of the singing challenges, Levine chose fellow contestant Amber Carrington, which gave Allen the opportunity to be “stolen” by another judge, Shakira. As the season came to a close, Allen was the last one standing on Shakira’s team and made it as a finalist on the show.
As her past has shown, this girl was destined for success, which continues with her role as Leading Player for the 2014 national revival tour of Pippin! Just goes to show, the saying rings true: As one door closes, another opens. Do not miss Allen’s magical performance when Pippin hits the Queen City May 19-24, 2015!
