Tuesday Tune: ‘Remember Me’ by Chris Mann of The Phantom of the Opera
Chris Mann is an acclaimed vocalist and songwriter, was a finalist on the second season of NBC’s “The Voice” and will appear as The Phantom when the spectacular new production of The Phantom of the Opera comes to Belk Theater Feb. 4-15. Mann released a new single titled “Remember Me” on Jan. 20.
Mann co-wrote the song with his wife, Laura Mann, and with world-renowned neuroscientist and Alzheimer’s researcher Dr. Rudy Tanzi. They wrote the song for families dealing with Alzheimer’s, with the hope that the song and social media campaign #RememberMe will put greater national focus on the disease and increase fundraising to find a cure. Portions of the proceeds from sales of the song, now available via iTunes and Amazon, will go to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, a nonprofit organization where 100 percent of all donations go directly to research.
The song is written from the perspective of someone with Alzheimer’s who pleads to be remembered when they can’t remember themselves. “I’ve had strong responses to songs before,” Mann said, “but nothing ever like this. This song is special, and it’s speaking to people. When I sing ‘Remember Me,’ there isn’t a dry eye in the room. It’s powerful. It makes people want to unite and find a cure.”
The music video for “Remember Me” was directed by Laura Mann and features Christina Dooling — a cast member of the Ballet Chorus in the national tour of Phantom — as an elderly woman stricken with Alzheimer’s who dances away both the age and disease. The design talents of additional members of the Phantom tour cast and crew are also featured in this compelling representation of the song. Watch the video here.
The social media campaign, #RememberMe, also launched on Jan. 22, asks for anyone whose lives have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease to share the video online, post pictures of themselves holding signs with “#RememberMe” and their loved ones’ names, including the #RememberMe in social media posts and purchasing the single.
