Rhiannon Giddens

Rhiannon Giddens, lead singer and founding member of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, just released her solo debut album, and she’s bringing her new music to the intimate McGlohon Theater on Wednesday, April 1.

One of the many talented singers to hail from North Carolina, Giddens was born and raised in Greensboro. A classically trained vocalist, her voice is spiritual, haunting, sultry, almost angelic. I personally cannot wait to hear it echo throughout McGlohon, which is arguably the best concert hall in Charlotte. Well, I may be a little biased, but it’s my personal favorite.

Produced by T Bone Burnett, “Tomorrow Is My Turn” features one all-new track written by Giddens as well as covers of other prolific female vocalists, such as Dolly Parton, Nina Simone, Patsy Cline and Odetta. Reflecting upon her reimagining of those classic songs, Rolling Stone said, “Giddens imbues these classics with a freshness and vitality that feel right at home in 2015.” Boston Globe said, “Obviously her connection to the material runs deep. Her voice, and the way it works with such subtlety in different contexts, is the album’s biggest surprise and centerpiece.”

Hear her take on one of my favorites with Dolly Parton’s “Don’t Let It Trouble Your Mind” below. Giddens talks about her choice to cover the Dolly Parton tune:

“Dolly Parton has always been a hero of mine; not only did she not forget her roots and her people when she ‘hit it big,’ she just happens to be an astute businesswoman and a damn fine songwriter. This one in particular is a great representative of her earlier work – the attitude is dripping from every word.”

Giddens also gave an amazing live performance of “Waterboy” on “Late Show With David Letterman.” Watch that performance here.

Don’t miss Rhiannon Giddens with special guest Bhi Bhiman live at McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square on Wednesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. Seats are selling fast, so get yours today! Prices begin at just $25.
