Tuesday Tune: ‘My Girl’ by The Temptations

June 5, 2015

Break out your go-go boots and bell-bottom jeans — for this Tuesday Tune we are bringing back the ’60s in honor of two legendary groups coming to Charlotte next month! Two of Motown’s most consistent hit-makers, The Temptations and The Four Tops, perform July 9 in Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center!

Listen to James Jamerson’s bass line, which mirrors a gentle heartbeat, along with Robert White’s sinewy guitar lines as they begin playing their signature tune “My Girl.” “My Girl” went to No. 1 on the R&B charts for six weeks in 1965.

The Temptations: For more than 40 years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world. Thanks to their fine-tuned choreography, and even finer harmonies, The Temptations became one of the most successful acts to record for Motown Records. During the Grammy-winning group’s five-decade career, No. 1 hits have included “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Get Ready,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” to name a few.

The Four Tops: The original Tops teamed up in high school to become one of Motown’s most consistent hit-makers, but their sound lives on four decades later with founding member Abdul “Duke” Fakir and well-known hits like “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “It’s the Same Old Song,” “Reach Out (I’ll Be There),” and “Ain’t No Woman (Like the One I’ve Got).”
