Be prepared for a great time when a legendary Grammy winning trio takes the stage at McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square on Aug. 19! Ry Cooder, Sharon White and Ricky Skaggs will come alive on stage to deliver a program of blues, gospel and bluegrass. They’re joined by Joachim Cooder on drums, and Mark Fain on bass with occasional guest performances by Buck White.

In honor of the trio dusting off the old country playbook and taking Charlotte’s stage, we dedicate this Tuesday Tune to Ricky Skaggs’ No. 1 hit “Highway 40 Blues.” On July 9, 1983, this song rose to the top of the charts and became America’s favorite country song.

Larry Cordle wrote the the song for Skaggs to record. Before recording the original song in 1983, Skaggs changed one line due to his Christian upbringing. Cordle wrote “My eyes are filled with bitter tears / Lord, I could use could an ice-cold beer” but Skaggs changed it to “Lord, I ain’t been home in years.” After releasing “Highway 40 Blues,” Skaggs became Billboard Magazine’s Artist of the Year.

Watch Skaggs perform the song in the video below.
